What is the true meaning of 'dating someone'?

I'm really confused. Kids my age are asking each other, 'Do you wanna go out with me?' and that automatically makes them boyfriend/girlfriend, even though they've never gone on an official date in the first place. Dating someone, seeing someone, being their boyfriend or girlfriend...Does it all add up to the same thing?

And then there's the story of hookups...What does all of this mean?

I'm thinking about not even trying to have a serious relationship anymore before I'm 18, until everybody (including myself) has matured a little.What is the true meaning of 'dating someone'?
everyone has their own definitions so it makes everything so confusing...

';do you wanna go out with me'; to me means do you want to go to a movie, to a friends house to hang out, etc. a better way to ask this i think would be ';do you want to go catch a movie or something friday?';

dating/seeing someone are two different things. dating someone means you have been on at least 2 dates but are not ';boyfriend %26amp; girlfriend.'; to see someone i think means that you like them and have been asked out by them but haven't gone anywhere with them yet. if you're seeing them you would talk and get to know eachother.

being boyfriend %26amp; girlfriend means you are in a relationship and aren't ';playing the field'; so to speak. you're interested in only that person and aren't flirting with other girls/guys.

in my own opinion- ';hooking up'; would be having sex. however, many teen mags say ';hooking up'; is kissing seriously (not just a peck or two) /making out.

everyone has their own definitions of all of these things and it just makes everything.What is the true meaning of 'dating someone'?
Okay this is what it means to me, i don't know if it'll make sense to you.

When someone ask somebody else if they want to go out with each other it makes boyfriend/girlfriend.

When two people go out on dates, flirt, kiss and act like they like each other, they are dating.

Hookups are basically nothing serious. You don't expect anything out of them. No dating, No being boyfriend and girlfriend. Just kissing and doing stuff.

Then there is friends with benefits, which is basically hooking up with friend regularly but not having the official tittle of boyfriend/girlfriend.

This is a basic explanation of what most teens do, and how they view ';Love';.
It's just a figure of speech. I honestly prefer to be asked ';Do you want to be my girlfriend?';

Kids think that saying ';Do you want to go out with me?'; Means they are boyfriend/girlfriend. They don't hang out together outside of school, they hardly talk to each other. The only thing that they do is hold hands maybe. It's really a waste of your time.

Like you said, wait until you and others have matured enough so you will actually have a legit relationship.
unless your mature, it means nothing really. For other teens it means getting with someone you like and getting to know them, or lets look at this with a cold hearted eye it means that teens want to get laid (which isn't aways true but for most teens other then myself and probably you as well it stand to be true). hope this helps.
Dating someone, seeing someone, being their bf and gf are practically all the same thing. They all mean that the two are a couple.

Hookups are like one-night make out sessions. Like if two people were drunk and they made out at a party one night. But they don't become bf and gf. That's a hookup.

I like your decision of waiting.
Yeah I have been noticing the same thing. To tell you the truth I think it is all immaturity of the kids because they are in such a rush to have a boyfriend/girlfriend that they just ';go out with each other';
im not sure but its fun
