seriously though, right now Saudi Arabia is probably the most scary place in the world and it has never been much fun to begin with. But muslim-ruled Spain was a much more tolerant place than christian-ruled Spain a few centuries later. Really pointless to generalize about stuff like that.

There is no compulsion in Islam. If you look throughout histroy you will see that many people try to force their religion on others. However, in Islam they should not.

Its not true that Muslims forced others to convert when they conquered countries, when Muslims conquered Spain they didn't force anyone to convert, some people converted and some didn't but it was their own free choice, Muslims, Christians and Jewish people lived side by side, and it was a golden age.
Submission to god yes, not to make others submit and no Islam does not force conversion, it is up to individuals to do so at their own accord if they wish.

well that was mostly a plitical issue in the past..you cannot tie up that with any religion...for example ottomans stop trying to convert the jewish and christian citizens just because that they have discovered that the tax (cizye) which was collected from nonmuslims was a great income...for 350 years the ';cizye'; tax was the 1\3 of the whole treasure gained each year..it is just a political decision i think..
