Is it true that the meaning of WOG is Western Oriental Gentlemen?

i guy at the local pub called me this and explained it... i have my doubts though so im still considering going back and socking him in the mouthIs it true that the meaning of WOG is Western Oriental Gentlemen?
No. Mostly when the origin of a word is traced back to an acronym, it's false. (e.g. the old chestnut about ';f*ck'; being ';fornication under consent of the king'; etc). ';Wog'; was in use for several hundred years and is found at the end of ';golliwog'; in texts way back in the 18th century. Acronyms, on the other hand, didn't really get used until the first world war.

Also, ';wog'; is usually used to refer to black people, who are clearly not ';oriental';.

You'd best go and punch the guy in the mouth. Is it true that the meaning of WOG is Western Oriental Gentlemen?
No, it isn't true. My OED lists ';origin unknown';. Be suspicious of any claimed acronym from before WWII. There were a few but not many and hardly any have come from before the 20th century. The term ';wog'; was used of Middle Eastern people extending into India and north Africa where the word ';****er'; took over. ';Oriental'; was used to describe the Chinese, and Japanese and other ';celestials';. Wogs were never oriental.
