What is the realy meaning of ';to thy own self be true'; ?

i wnt to get that as a tattoo because i think it means be true to yourself but i have read that it means differently but would it be wrong to get this tattoo for the reason i think the meaning is?What is the realy meaning of ';to thy own self be true'; ?
It means be true to yourself. If anyone else says differently, you can tell them that what they say is not the meaning you intended when you got the tattoo. What is the realy meaning of ';to thy own self be true'; ?
It means you don't have to do what everyone tells you to do just because they say so. You don't have to be part of the crowd. You can take advice for what it is worth but follow your own feelings. You can follow your dreams because your worth it. Don't sell out to others agenda. You can express yourself without defacing your body. You don't have to follow a passing fad. Would you do this at the age of 60? Would you let your kids do this?
It means don't bullshyte a bullshyter.

If you can't face up to your own reality, how can you deal with the rest of the world.

Oh and don't forget to thank those above who said ';Being true to yourself = being true to yourself';, as if the definition of soap was um, soap!
It does NOT mean that you should elevate yourself above others. That's arrogance. It means to be true to the real part of you and of everyone. To be true to the good inside you and others. To support that which is best for everyone. Do the right thing.
Yes, it does mean ';be true to yourself.'; The order does not change the meaning, and ';thy'; means ';your.'; So: ';to thy own self be true'; = ';to your own self be true'; = ';be true to your own self.';
true to your inner self
