Thanksgiving is a holiday began by the Pilgrims (one of the US's first European settlers). They were nearly killed off by sickness and starvation until the Indians visited them and aided them agriculturally to survive. They basically had a joyous party and feast for those couple of weeks or so. There were MANY miraclous occurances from God toward the Pilgrims in their journey and settlement period. They were a very Godly people who escaped religious tyranny in Brittain and intended to evangelize whoever was in the new world (America). They had a thanksgiving toward God that was so deep during that feasting that the tradition of thanking God for his providing our needs (and more) has become a wonderful tradition, and an official holiday. So to celebrate it properly, we turn our focus onto God our provider (not so much focusing on family and food, if one honors the day properly).Do I have this right concerning the true meaning of the Thanksgiving holiday?
Yes, but God performs miracles each day. He should be our focus everyday.
But again, this should be the focus, even in our ';progressive society';.
Good question; ThanksDo I have this right concerning the true meaning of the Thanksgiving holiday?
The Pilgrims were more like a bunch of hippys of their time and troublemakers that England was happy to see leave.
Was it god who drove non christian Indians to help the pilgrims? Perhaps...perhaps not. I feel it was human kindness and generosity, and do not understand why people who fled religious tyranny then chose to spread it. I celebrate by giving thanks for everything life has given me...by grace of family, friends, wealth, health, love, food etc. Some of this comes to me by fate, some hard work, some other peoples generosity. If you believe in a god that has given you things to be grateful for then by all means, celebrate that, but not to the exclusion of the many other wonderful things around you.
